Claude vs ChatGPT for Small Business: Which to Pay For

Claude vs ChatGPT for Small Business: Which to Pay For

Claude vs ChatGPT for small business comes down to how you work, not which logo is smarter. Both have a free plan, a paid plan around the same price and an agent that can take a whole task off your plate. They differ in where that agent works, what each free plan includes and how each one handles your business files. This page is part of my AI tool comparisons for business owners.

Pick Claude if most of your AI work is writing in your own voice and repeat jobs that run from your business files, because Claude Code and Cowork are built around folders, projects and skills. Pick ChatGPT if you want the most generous free plan, images and voice in one app, and an agent that lives inside the tools your team already uses.

I run four businesses and use both every week. Everything below was checked on Anthropic's and OpenAI's own pricing, product and help pages on October 30, 2026. Both companies change plans often, so the sources are linked.

The two numbers I could not confirm are ChatGPT's prices. OpenAI's pricing page loads them per country, so I have left them out rather than guess.

Where Claude is the better pick

Claude's strength for a small business is that it treats your business as a set of files it should read every time.

  • The free plan already does real work. Anthropic's pricing page lists web search, file creation, memory, connectors to your apps, skills and up to five projects on Free. You can set up a project with your price list and tone of voice before you pay anything.
  • Claude Code comes with Pro. It works inside a folder on your computer, reads every file in it and saves its output next to the inputs. For jobs you run every week (proposals, lead lists, content from one recording) that folder becomes the memory. My guide to Claude Code for business owners covers the setup without a terminal.
  • Cowork hands off the bigger tasks. On any paid plan you describe an outcome and Claude plans the steps, runs them in Anthropic's cloud and hands back the spreadsheet, deck or document. It keeps going when you close the laptop.
  • Long documents fit. The pricing page lists a context window of up to 1M tokens on every plan, depending on the model. That matters when you paste a full contract, a year of reviews or a long transcript.
  • Writing in your voice. This one is my opinion, not a spec. When I give both the same voice file and the same brief, Claude's drafts need less editing before they sound like me.

Where ChatGPT is the better pick

ChatGPT is the better first tool for a lot of owners, and I tell people that.

  • The free plan goes further for everyday chat. OpenAI lists unlimited text chats on Free, within abuse limits. If you mostly ask quick questions, you may never need to pay.
  • One app for text, images and voice. Image creation and voice chats are on every ChatGPT plan, so a social post, its graphic and a quick voice brainstorm happen in one place.
  • ChatGPT Work goes where your team already is. OpenAI's launch post says Work connects through plugins to Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, SharePoint, email, calendars and CRMs, and runs Scheduled Tasks while you are away.
  • Custom GPTs. Plus includes projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs, which are an easy way to give staff one assistant set up the same way for everyone.
  • Your staff probably know it already. Less training is a real cost saving for a small team.

Agents: Cowork and Claude Code vs ChatGPT Work and Codex

Both companies now sell two kinds of agent. One handles knowledge work (research, documents, spreadsheets). The other works on files and code.

  1. 1

    Knowledge work, Claude

Cowork runs in Anthropic's cloud and reaches your computer through the desktop app

  2. 2

    Knowledge work, ChatGPT

ChatGPT Work uses your apps through plugins and your local files on desktop

  3. 3

    Folders and code, Claude

Claude Code works in the folder you open, on your computer

  4. 4

    Folders and code, ChatGPT

Codex, now merged into the ChatGPT desktop app

The four agents, matched by job

The jobs overlap more than the names suggest. I compare the two knowledge-work agents in detail in Claude Cowork vs ChatGPT, and the two Claude agents in Claude Cowork vs Claude Code.

Where they differ for a business owner:

  • Approval. Anthropic says Cowork asks for explicit permission before it permanently deletes any file. OpenAI says you can follow Work's progress, answer its questions and approve important actions.
  • Usage. Both agents use more of your plan than chat does. Anthropic says Cowork uses limits faster than chat. OpenAI says Work follows the same usage structure as Codex, and complex tasks use more of your included usage.
  • Where your files live. Cowork sessions and files are saved to your Claude account in the cloud. Claude Code keeps the work in a folder on your machine by default.

What each one costs a small business

Claude's plans, from Anthropic's pricing page on October 30, 2026:

Claude planPriceWhat it adds
Free$0Chat, web search, files, memory, connectors, skills, 5 projects
Pro$20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearlyCowork tasks and scheduling, Claude Code, projects, Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365
Max$100 a month5x Pro usage
Ultra$200 a monthNo 5-hour limit for verified accounts, 10x Pro usage each week
Team$20 a seat a month billed yearly ($25 monthly), premium seats $100 ($125 monthly)Central billing, SSO, more usage than Pro, 2 to 150 people

ChatGPT's individual plans are Free, Go, Plus and Pro, where Pro has three usage tiers. Business is priced per seat and Enterprise is quoted by sales. OpenAI's pricing page says the Go plan may include ads.

For one owner, the real question is which $20-ish plan you will open every day. Paying for both is reasonable once you know what each one is for.

How I split the work

My default for anything that repeats is Claude Code in the desktop app. The daily plan, lead lists, proposals and content from one video all read the same business files, so a folder with skills beats starting a new chat. That is also what my AI Operator Kit runs on.

I still use ChatGPT for quick questions on my phone, images, and anything a teammate will pick up in ChatGPT later. The Kit's prompts work in both, because most of my audience already pays for one of the two. When a job is really a scheduled workflow between apps, I reach for a tool built for that, which I cover in n8n vs Claude Code.

Which one should you pick?

  • You write a lot and want it to sound like you: Claude Pro, with a project or folder holding your voice and offers.
  • You want one recurring job done the same way every week: Claude Code, with the job saved as a skill.
  • You mostly ask quick questions and want images: ChatGPT, starting on Free.
  • Your team lives in Slack, Teams or a CRM already: ChatGPT Work, or Claude with the matching connectors. Test the connector you need before you pick.
  • You are not sure: use both free plans for a week on the same three real jobs, then pay for the one you kept opening.

Claude vs ChatGPT for small business: FAQ

Which AI is best for a small business?

Is Claude the best AI for businesses?

Claude is strong for business writing, long documents and repeat jobs run from folders and skills. It is not the best at everything: ChatGPT has image creation on every plan and a more generous free chat allowance. Test both on your own work.

What can Claude do for small business owners?

Claude can draft proposals, emails and posts in your voice, research leads from public information, analyse spreadsheets and long documents, and run multi-step tasks in Cowork. Anthropic's Claude for Small Business adds ready-made workflows inside Cowork for tools like QuickBooks and HubSpot.

How much is Claude for small business owners?

Claude has a free plan. Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly, and includes Cowork and Claude Code. Max is $100 a month and Ultra $200. Team seats start at $20 a month billed yearly, per Anthropic's pricing page in October 2026.

Run both from one setup

If you want the jobs set up instead of starting from a blank chat, the AI Operator Kit runs on your phone in the Claude or ChatGPT app, or on a computer in Claude Code, Codex or Cursor. It has five systems for content, leads, outreach, sales and building, plus 107 prompts sorted by job.
