Claude Cowork vs ChatGPT Work: Which Agent to Use

Claude Cowork vs ChatGPT Work: Which Agent to Use

Claude Cowork vs ChatGPT is now a fair fight. In July 2026 OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work, its agent for long, multi-step business tasks, and it does the same kind of job as Anthropic's Cowork: you hand it an outcome, it plans the steps, works across your apps and files, and hands back finished work. This comparison is part of my AI tool comparisons for business owners.

Pick Claude Cowork if your work lives in documents and folders, you want the agent to keep running in the cloud with your laptop closed, and you already use Claude's projects and skills. Pick ChatGPT Work if your team runs on Slack, Teams, SharePoint or a CRM, you want sites and web apps from the same agent, and you need a free tier to test on.

Both agents change monthly. Every product fact here comes from Anthropic's and OpenAI's own pricing, help and launch pages, checked on October 30, 2026.

What Claude Cowork is

Anthropic's Claude Cowork product page
Anthropic's Cowork page: give it a goal and it works across your files and tools.

Anthropic's help center describes Cowork as Claude Code's agentic capabilities brought to knowledge work beyond coding, with no terminal. You describe an outcome, Claude makes a plan, breaks the work into subtasks, runs code and shell commands in an isolated environment on Anthropic's servers and delivers the files to your session.

What stands out:

  • It runs in the cloud. Sessions and files live with your Claude account and continue when you close the laptop.
  • One Claude. Anthropic is rolling out a single experience on Pro, Max and Ultra where chat and Cowork share one message box, and your chats, tasks, projects, connectors and skills carry over.
  • Shared memory with chat. What Claude learns in a chat carries into Cowork, and the other way round.
  • Projects. Workspaces with their own files, instructions and memory for related tasks.
  • Browser actions. On desktop it uses a built-in browser, or Claude in Chrome if you have it.

My owner's guide, Claude Cowork for business owners, lists six jobs to hand it first.

What ChatGPT Work is

OpenAI's launch post calls ChatGPT Work an agent that can take action across your apps and files, stay with a project for hours and turn a goal into finished work. It runs on OpenAI's newer models and has Codex technology built in.

What stands out:

  • Plugins into team tools. OpenAI names Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, SharePoint, email, calendars, CRMs and project trackers. Type "@" and an app name to point it at one.
  • The desktop app. OpenAI merged the Codex app into a new ChatGPT desktop app for Mac and Windows. On desktop, Work can use your local files and apps, and a built-in browser brings in websites and online files.
  • Sites. Work can build interactive web apps and publish them as Sites, which OpenAI lists as a public beta.
  • Scheduled Tasks. OpenAI's example: turning new Slack and Teams messages into updated docs or slides and sharing the changes.
  • Auto-review for organisations. For connected tools and APIs, OpenAI says a model reviews important actions before they happen.

If you searched for "ChatGPT agent", ChatGPT Work is the agent OpenAI built for this kind of long-running business task.

Where each one runs

This is the difference I would decide on.

  1. 1

    Cowork

runs in Anthropic's cloud, in an isolated environment per task

  2. 2

    Cowork on your computer

local files and browser only through the open desktop app

  3. 3

    ChatGPT Work

runs on web and mobile, plus the desktop app

  4. 4

    ChatGPT Work on your computer

local files, apps and a built-in browser through the desktop app

Where the work happens in each agent

Cowork's default is the cloud. You start a task, close the laptop, and check it from your phone. When it needs something on your machine, the desktop app has to be open.

ChatGPT Work also follows you across web, mobile and desktop. OpenAI frames the desktop app as the more capable version, since that is where Work reaches local files and apps.

For anything that must never leave one computer, neither cloud agent is the right default. Anthropic's own help center points people to Claude Code in the desktop app for that, which I compare in Claude Cowork vs Claude Code.

Connectors, skills and plugins

Both agents are only as good as what they can reach.

  • Cowork uses the connectors, skills and plugins enabled on your Claude account. Anthropic's Claude for Small Business package adds Cowork workflows for QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, Canva, Docusign, Google Workspace and Microsoft 365.
  • ChatGPT Work uses plugins from OpenAI's unified directory, and ChatGPT can suggest relevant ones during a conversation.

Before you pick, list the three tools your business runs on and check each agent's directory for them. That one check decides more than any feature table.

Plans and usage

Claude Cowork is on every paid Claude plan, per Anthropic's pricing page: Pro at $20 a month or $17 a month billed yearly, Max at $100, Ultra at $200, Team from $20 a seat billed yearly and Enterprise from $20 a seat plus usage at API rates. It is not on the free plan.

ChatGPT Work has limited access on Free and Go through the desktop app, and expanded access on desktop, web and mobile with Plus and Pro, per OpenAI's pricing page. Business and Enterprise include it with admin controls. OpenAI loads its prices by country, so I have not quoted them here.

Usage is the hidden cost on both. Anthropic says Cowork uses limits faster than chat. OpenAI says Work follows the same usage structure as Codex, and complex tasks use more of your plan.

Which one I would pick for a small business

I use Claude for the systems in my own businesses, so weigh my bias. Here is how I would choose by job:

JobPick
Reports, decks and spreadsheets from documents you uploadEither; test both on one real job
A task you start from your phone and leave runningCowork
Work that lives in Slack, Teams or SharePointChatGPT Work
Bookkeeping and invoices in QuickBooks with ready-made workflowsCowork, with Claude for Small Business
A small web app or page from the same agentChatGPT Work, with Sites
Writing that has to sound like youCowork, with a project holding your voice files
Testing an agent before payingChatGPT Work, on the free desktop app

The broader app comparison, chat included, is in Claude vs ChatGPT for small business. For jobs that move data between apps on a fixed schedule, an automation tool can beat both agents, which I cover in n8n vs Claude Code.

Claude Cowork vs ChatGPT: FAQ

What is the difference between Claude Enterprise and Claude Cowork?

Claude Enterprise is a plan for large organisations, with single sign-on, audit logs, admin controls and usage billed at API rates. Claude Cowork is a product: Claude's agent for multi-step knowledge work. Enterprise owners can turn Cowork on for their organisation.

What are the limitations of Claude AI?

Claude has usage limits on every plan that reset every five hours and every week, and Cowork uses them faster than chat. Cowork is not on the free plan, it needs the desktop app open to reach your local files, and like any AI it can make mistakes, so check its work.

Is ChatGPT a chatbot or an AI agent?

ChatGPT is both. Regular ChatGPT is a chatbot that answers in a conversation. ChatGPT Work, launched in July 2026, is an agent inside ChatGPT that takes multi-step actions across your apps and files and can run Scheduled Tasks.

What is the price of Claude.ai Pro?

Claude Pro is $20 a month billed monthly, or $17 a month billed yearly ($200 up front), per Anthropic's pricing page in October 2026. Prices exclude tax. Pro includes Claude Cowork and Claude Code.

Get the jobs, not just the agent

An agent is only as useful as the jobs you give it. The AI Operator Kit gives you five systems for content, leads, outreach, sales and building, a daily operator plan and 107 prompts sorted by job, and it runs in both Claude and ChatGPT. Everything inside is on the Operator Kit page.
