Claude Cowork for Business Owners: What to Hand It First

Claude Cowork for Business Owners: What to Hand It First

Claude Cowork for business owners is the part of Claude that takes a whole task off your list instead of answering one message. You describe the outcome, step away, and come back to a finished spreadsheet, report, deck or cleaned-up folder. It is one of the Claude use cases by role I get asked about most by owners who do not code.

Claude Cowork is Anthropic's agent for knowledge work, included with every paid Claude plan. A business owner describes an outcome in plain English, and Cowork plans the steps, works across connected apps and files in Anthropic's cloud, and hands back finished work for review. Scheduled tasks repeat it automatically.

Everything below comes from Anthropic's pricing page, help center and announcements, checked on October 30, 2026. Cowork changes often, so the sources are linked.

What Claude Cowork does for a business owner

Anthropic's Claude Cowork product page
Anthropic's Cowork page: give it a goal and it works across your files and tools.

Anthropic's help center describes Cowork as Claude Code's agent architecture brought to knowledge work, with no terminal. In practice, for an owner, that means:

  • It plans before it works. You see the steps and can steer.
  • It splits big jobs up. Complex work is broken into subtasks, sometimes run in parallel by several sub-agents.
  • It makes real files. Excel spreadsheets with working formulas, PowerPoint decks and formatted documents.
  • It keeps going without you. Sessions run in Anthropic's cloud, so work continues when you close the laptop. Start on your desktop, check from your phone.
  • It remembers. Since August 2026, memory works across chat and Cowork, and you can edit or delete what it remembers under Settings, then Memory.
  • It repeats. Scheduled tasks run on a cadence you pick, in the cloud, with no device online.

It reaches your own computer (local folders, the browser) only through the Claude desktop app, and only while the app is open.

What it costs

Cowork has no separate price. It comes with the paid Claude plans, per Anthropic's pricing page:

PlanPriceCowork
Free$0Not included
Pro$20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearlyIncluded
Max$100 a monthIncluded, 5x Pro usage
Ultra$200 a monthIncluded, 10x Pro usage each week
Team$20 a seat a month billed yearly ($25 monthly)Included
Enterprise$20 a seat a month billed yearly plus usage at API ratesAvailable when an owner turns it on

The real cost is usage. Anthropic says Cowork uses your limits faster than chat, because one task runs many steps and tool calls. Group related work into one task and keep quick questions in chat.

Six jobs to hand Cowork first

Start with jobs where you can check the result in two minutes and where a mistake costs nothing because nothing gets sent.

Claude Cowork

your connected apps, your files and a plain-English outcome

  • Weekly numbers

one page on sales, cash and pipeline

  • Invoice follow-up

who owes what, with drafted reminders

  • Proposals and decks

from your notes to a file you can send

  • Research

a competitor, a supplier or a new market

  • File clean-up

sort, rename and summarise a messy folder

  • Content plan

a month of posts from your real questions

Six first jobs for a business owner. Cowork prepares, you approve.

1. A weekly numbers page

> Every Monday at 7am: read last week's sales export in my Drive folder and the pipeline from HubSpot. Build one page with revenue against the week before, the five biggest open deals and anything that slipped. Save it as a document. Do not send it.

2. Invoice follow-up

> Read the unpaid invoices export I attached. List who owes what and how late it is, oldest first. Draft a polite reminder for each, firmer for anything over 30 days. Do not send.

3. Proposals and decks

> Here are my notes from today's call and my price list. Build a proposal document with scope, three options from my price list only and a dated next step, plus a 6-slide deck version. Anything I did not price becomes a question for me.

4. Research

> Research the five competitors I listed from their public websites. Make a spreadsheet: what they sell, starting prices where published, who they target, and one thing each does better than me. Cite the page for every fact.

5. File clean-up

> Go through the "Client docs" folder I connected. Suggest a folder structure, rename files to "client - document - date", and give me a summary of anything that looks unsigned or out of date. Ask before moving anything.

6. A content plan

> I pasted the ten questions customers asked me this month. Turn them into a four-week content plan: one post idea per question, the hook, and which platform it fits. Keep my answers in my words.

Claude for Small Business

In May 2026 Anthropic launched Claude for Small Business, a package of connectors and ready-to-run workflows that you toggle on inside Cowork. It connects to QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, Canva, Docusign, Google Workspace and Microsoft 365.

  • HubSpot logoHubSpot
  • Canva logoCanva
The tools Claude for Small Business connects to, per Anthropic's announcement

Anthropic says it ships with 15 agentic workflows and 15 skills across finance, operations, sales, marketing, HR and customer service: planning payroll, closing the month, chasing invoices, running a campaign and a regular business pulse. Two details matter for an owner:

  • You start every workflow. Anthropic says you approve the plan before anything sends, posts or pays.
  • Existing permissions hold. If an employee cannot see something in QuickBooks or Drive today, they cannot see it through Claude.

If you already run those tools, switch it on before you write your own tasks. It is the fastest way to see what Cowork can do with your real data.

Cowork, chat or Claude Code?

Anthropic is folding chat and Cowork into one Claude experience on Pro, Max and Ultra, so in many accounts you no longer choose. Claude decides whether a message is a quick answer or a task.

Claude Code is still separate. It works inside a folder on your computer and suits jobs you run every week from the same business files. My default for a business is Claude Code for the recurring system and Cowork for errands, especially ones I start from my phone. The full split is in Claude Cowork vs Claude Code, and the setup is in my guide to Claude Code for business owners.

If you are still choosing between Anthropic and OpenAI, I compared the two agents in Claude Cowork vs ChatGPT.

Rules to set before you connect your tools

  1. Keep approvals on. Cowork has Manual and Auto modes. Stay on Manual until a task has run cleanly for a few weeks. Anthropic says Cowork always asks before permanently deleting files.
  2. Connect only what the task needs. One folder, one inbox, one CRM. Not your whole drive.
  3. Turn model training off on a personal plan, under Settings, then Privacy. Anthropic says it does not train on Team and Enterprise content by default.
  4. Numbers come from your systems. Let Cowork read exports and connected tools. Never let it fill gaps with estimates in anything a client or accountant will see.
  5. Delete what you do not need. Anthropic says a deleted task leaves your history immediately and is removed from its storage within 30 days.

Claude Cowork for business owners: FAQ

How much do I need to pay for Claude Cowork?

Claude Cowork is included with paid Claude plans: Pro at $20 a month or $17 a month billed yearly, Max at $100, Ultra at $200, and Team from $20 a seat billed yearly, per Anthropic's pricing page in October 2026. There is no separate Cowork fee.

Can I use Claude Cowork without paying?

Claude Cowork is not on the free plan. Anthropic lists handing off and scheduling tasks on Pro and above. The free plan still includes chat, web search, files, memory, connectors, skills and up to five projects, which is enough to test Claude on your work first.

Is Claude Cowork available for enterprise users?

Claude Cowork is available on Enterprise plans when an owner enables it, including on the web and mobile apps. Team plans have it too, with web and mobile in beta. Admins control connectors, web search and Claude in Chrome from organization settings.

Can Claude help me with my business?

Claude can help with most of the writing, research and admin in a business: proposals, emails, reports, spreadsheets, research and content. Cowork takes multi-step tasks off your list, and Claude for Small Business adds ready-made workflows for tools like QuickBooks and HubSpot. You still check and send.

Which is better for small business, ChatGPT or Claude?

Neither wins for every small business. Claude suits owners who write a lot and run repeat jobs from their files. ChatGPT suits owners who want a generous free plan with images and voice. I compare them in Claude vs ChatGPT for small business.
