Claude Code for business owners

Claude Code for business owners is not about writing software. It is about handing an AI the writing and research jobs you do every week, in a folder that already knows your business.

This is how I use it to run content, leads, outreach and proposals across my companies, and how to set up the same thing without writing a line of code.

What Claude Code does for a business owner

Claude Code is Anthropic's AI agent that works inside a folder on your computer: it reads your files, writes new ones and runs the tasks you describe in plain English. Developers use it to build software. Business owners can point the same agent at the work that eats their week.

Five jobs I hand to Claude Code

  • Content: one question a client asked becomes a reel script, a carousel, a LinkedIn post and an X post.
  • Leads: a niche and a city become a scored list of businesses, each with a real reason to reach out.
  • Outreach: a first message that opens with something specific to that business, plus four follow-ups.
  • Proposals: my call notes become a proposal with three price options the same day.
  • The morning plan: my top three priorities, the follow-ups due and one content task.

Set it up without a terminal

You need a Windows or Mac computer, a paid Claude plan and about 20 minutes.

  • Install the desktop app. Download Claude from claude.com/download, sign in and open the Code tab. That is Claude Code, with no terminal involved. It is not included in the free plan, and plans change, so check Anthropic's pricing before you buy.
  • Give it one folder. Create my-business in Documents and choose it in the Code tab. Claude Code only sees the folder you give it, so never point it at your whole home folder, your desktop or your downloads.
  • Keep "ask before editing" on. You approve every change until a job has run cleanly for a few weeks.
  • Lock down your account. Turn model training off under Settings, then Privacy, before any business data goes in, and turn on two-factor sign-in.

Why it has to know your business first

Ask any AI for a sales email cold and you get something generic. The fix is four short files it reads before every job: what you sell, who buys it, how you talk and the results you can prove. Write them once. Every job after that comes back in your voice, with your prices.

Let Claude Code write them by interviewing you:

First prompt

Interview me about my business, one question at a time. When you have enough, write four files: business.md (what I sell and the prices), ideal-customer.md (who buys and how to spot them), voice.md (how I write, words I use and never use) and proof.md (results I am allowed to quote). If I skip a question, write [CONFIRM: ...] instead of guessing.

When it asks about your voice, paste three to five real things you wrote: posts, an old proposal, your website copy. The [CONFIRM: ...] rule matters most. An agent that guesses your prices or invents a result is worse than no agent.

Claude Code also reads a file called CLAUDE.md at the start of every session. Keep it to a few lines that point at your four files. My video on why most CLAUDE.md files make Claude Code worse covers the research behind keeping it short.

Your first three jobs

Start with jobs where you can judge the output in two minutes.

Content

Read voice.md. A customer asked me "do I need to post every day?" Turn my answer into a LinkedIn post, a 7-slide carousel outline and a short reel script. Save them in outputs/content.

Leads

Read ideal-customer.md. Find 10 landscaping companies in Denver from public listings. Score each from 0 to 10 against my ideal customer, show the evidence for every point and save it as outputs/leads.md.

Proposal

Read business.md. Here are my notes from today's call: [paste notes]. Write a proposal with three price options taken only from business.md. Anything I did not price becomes a question for me. Save it in outputs/proposals.

Open each file it saves and check every number against your own files, then edit for two minutes rather than rewriting for ten. If the drafts sound generic, add more real writing to voice.md. If it invents facts, a file still has gaps: fill them or mark them [CONFIRM: ...].

Do you need to know how to code?

No. You type requests in plain English, and the desktop app's Code tab means you never open a terminal. If you would rather skip the computer setup, the same jobs run in the Claude or ChatGPT phone app.

Copy my setup instead of building it

The AI Operator Kit is the setup I use, ready to copy: 18 Claude Code commands for jobs like /repurpose, /research-leads and /proposal, an example business with every file filled in, a video course and a 107-prompt library. One payment, nothing renews.
