Those of you who don't know pair what pair AI is I'll give you a brief rundown in just a second but that video for you know for my typical Channel and My Views it got a lot of traction for me yeah 11k views in 13 days pretty good at that time I didn't see any other creator that made a video on pair AI besides the founders and quite frankly I didn't expect it to do so well but it it did and

It kind of just showed me that okay wow okay A lot of people are interested within Pari and one of the reasons for that um kind of later on I found out even though I knew about the founders but they do have a large following on YouTube and uh other platforms as well so so if you don't know what Pari is it's essentially a competitor to cursor all right but I also mentioned in this pair AI video um the reason I'm

Bringing this up too is because I actually covered this topic in depth so it's kind of interesting um if you I'll leave a link to that video down below because I did about like five six minutes referencing this docu or this uh blog post right here on builder. uh where he's talking about open source software has consequences and going over 99% of vs code obviously is since it's a fork and that is and then if you look at cursor it's it's

Only about 1% of the actual app is cursor's code so I'm not going to go go over this I would definitely recommend checking this blog post out if you're interested on it as well as checking out the video I made on Peri but essentially just goes over the cursor situation how they they took a VSS code MIT license out of some AI features and now charge 20 bucks a month for it they have full control over the software and their users

Don't get me wrong cursor's capabilities are great goes beyond GitHub co-pilot so yeah this he goes way more in depth in terms of like the whole situation and like talking about the ethics or you know whatever the case may be around you know forking open source software then like adding a couple features making a closed Source whatever and you know some people are think it's fine some people think I mean it's at the end of the day it's legal right if

From what they're doing and you could maybe say it's I don't know different people probably fall on different spectrums for ethical and all this stuff right I'm not here to talk about that or what not but if you do want to mention what you think on this that topic you can let me know in the comments down below even goes on to talk about the Venture Capital effect of Open Source software so this like I went over this more in depth

Like I said in that video and I would recommend checking out that video but it actually kind of funny enough like after I made that video and talked about this kind of foreshadowed a little bit of what's kind of come about so you don't know about the um the whole drama that's going on with Pari essentially um first off we'll get into what is Pari so we talked about cursor cursor is a fork of vs code right now Pari is a

Fork of vs code just like cursor obviously cursor is closed Source but Pari uh is also a fork of continued depth so vs code is sort of like the editor just like cursor and then they took continue Dev which if you don't know about Contin Dev I've done many videos on it it's essentially a really good AI pair programmer um a a fork or it's like a alternative to get Hub copilot but it's an extension but it's really good you can

Use a llama you can use more models than you can with cursor but it doesn't of course have like cursor composer and these really cool features that cursor now added on and essentially what pair AI is is here's the website the open source AI editor code editor um you know pretty much I'm not going to go through the whole Spiel here but it has pretty much all the Well it has all the same features that obviously that continue dev has less

Twitter and the open- source AI programmer code editor a fork of vs code and continue Dev and pair AI so it's a fork of a fork of a fork so if you want you could go ahead and Fork this and then maybe create strawberry AI let me know if I should do that in the comments down below but as you can see here based on the git uh history or commits right here we can see renamed pair to Blueberry pretty much

Every single way Place removed uh bigotry just like it's it's really just a meme um project right here um so I just found that pretty funny um you can check it out and it's funny because it also has like I think it has 364 stars um so shout out to um this guy who made it it's kind of just funny little Meme here but anyways now yeah here's the video that I made on Pari you can check that out so I

Noticed kind of this drama going on this morning I checked out Hacker News and saw a bunch of stuff referencing the Ki drama um so links to that if you want to check some of that out but uh here is basically the post that stirred up everything so this is by the founder frying pan and he basically just says I quit my job uh 200k job at coinbase to join the first YC ball batch with my founder Nang we're building pair

Ai and open source AI code editor think better a think better C- pilot or open source cursor but you've heard the Spiel already launched 3 weeks ago and I already have 300 daily active users where four vs code so we you can maintain familiarity and utility users so far said Pari has up to five times their development but you've probably heard this already too so what makes us different we're already better than co-pilot due to not being restricted to open AI

Models better generated results and were open source compared to cursor so the question begs why does open source matter for the future of AI code editors well think about where the moat is the AI models know best model on the market will be used by any of the editors out there this means the true differentiator will be UI ux trust and transparency community support and feedback cycle distribution these are all perfectly outlined within with the benefits of Open Source uh I

Explain in more details as to why here I link this in our doc too this is a blog post just going over the benefits of Open Source and all pretty much expanding upon those topics um so open source beginning being the edge then why pair AI specifically there are other AI open source editors out there let's take a closer look PA AI currently has the most active open source Community out there uh out of most of it if not all AI

Code editors unlike most OP Source projects they're mostly wanted to contributing P AI has a 49% uh of it of all its commits made by contributors spanning from our landing page documentation server and app itself this explains peri's extremely fast development psycle code code editors are the best product to open source because each contributor are users of the product themselves this will allow everyone to have full access and transparency to the editor of the future not only is our code open

Source as as Founders our open source as well uh we post our entire development journey and life online through our YouTube and live streams this is the root of why we have such a strong Community right off the bat founder fit and I agree I mean I checked out obviously the the YouTube and the content you know they make great content and I think that's one of them you know really big reason why you would want I mean at the end

Of the day when you're looking at a company you want to bet on the founders right so they definitely have distribution for something like this uh in terms of like reach which is obviously very very very important for SAS if you have the development and then the the distribution and like I said here is frying pans uh YouTube 344k Subs N A little bit smaller but um yeah there's the links to them you can check out some of their videos all

Right so with the recent drama surrounding PA AI the YC com back startup here are some of the key issues that people are bringing up with this so basically you know cloning controversy so Peri openly admitted that their project was essentially a cloned copy of another AI editor called continued Dev which was covered under the Apachi open source license okay and then license mishandling so initially pairi applied its own madeup Clos license called the pair Enterprise license to the cloned project

This license was reportedly written by chat GPT which rais ser serous concerns in the open source community and then misleading presentation so the launch materials made it difficult to discern that Pari was a for a continued Dev leading to accusations of misleading potential uh users and investors okay these are just the ACC like the the issues that people are bringing up first off I do want to say I did like I did do a video on this tool two weeks ago

And I did watch like their some of their videos on it so I personally covered that it was a continue de fork and like it did say within the REM me and many different places like I was I was they they were pretty open with it being a continued de Fork um with that being said definitely within the announcement post here um not saying that this you know I can understand if someone didn't like for like for me I did a

Video on it a 15minute video um so obviously I knew it was a fork for for users using it you know most of them if they went actually went to it and use it it says continue de Fork so I get that but with if you just read this right here I mean it doesn't mention anywhere it mentions a vs code Fork but it doesn't mention a a continue de Fork so I can somewhat understand where some people are coming from

With that all even Tech crunch wrote a blog posts on it wcom so wcom itself is being criticized after it backed an AI startup that admits basically cloned another AI startup and the funny like not funny but the kind of you know not funny thing I guess is that continue Dev also is Yom back so they backed Yom and then you know that's what people are kind of pissed off about also guys I'm going to be reading through a lot of

Different tweets and threads here just to give you guys context but there are going to be uh time stamps here down below too so if you want to skip through certain things or watch on 1.5 two time speed for certain things then you can definitely do that I will try to be concise and get you up to speed as quick as possible um so Community backlash response so the launch threat went viral um attracting thousands of comments by Sunday and then

While some were congratulatory most were highly critical so some key reactions so X Community note Community note was added to peri's launch thread stating that it was a fork of continued Dev and that Peri had had uh Mass replace references to continue with Pari to mislead people this note was later removed due to uh inaccuracies though apparently so just a note there and then open source Community outrage so the uh open source Community was particularly upset about the license change as

It violates the principles of Open Source software and community building and then criticism of founder claims so pan statement about quitting the 200k job at Co coinbase to start the Venture was met with skepticism giving the lack of originality in the product um so yeah I think some people were kind of pissed off or like annoyed or thinking he was like kind of cocky or flexing or whatever um I'm not saying he was or whatever I'm just letting you guys know

What like some pissed off some people um and yeah if you want like I'm pretty much got all the main Twitter threads here I'll go over some um and these are just people's like opinions certain people talking about um this whole drama so we got pier richelson and he's one of the co-founders at Cal which is also an open source calendar software a really big calendar software and uh a couple takes on the vs code continue Dev Peri YC drama for

Contexts I did YC in W19 big fan of YC I run a large OSS uh project cal.com I have the most respect for Gary tan who also signed my 01 petition my takes I agree with my co-founder Bailey on this it's a bad look for everyone involved I give the benefit of the doubt to Gary and will wait for more contacts I don't think funding Forks is a winning strategy I have yet to seen a fork uh be more successful than

The initial Steward see Bitcoin cash I only see a reason to fund Forks when the initial Steward is widely unpopular or shuts down I.E Rome JS become biome JS as of today I don't see how vs code needs a fork and my POV is that all these cute AI extensions are in fact VSS code extensions I use super Maven a lot big fan funding a fork of a fork is next level uncertainty to make it in open source you need a

Strong you need strong open source ethics you uh are looking to build a community starting day one uh saying it's ours now is crazy disrespectful even if the fork is technically legal it's highly unethical and I don't see think that it's a great start to find pmf among de product Market fit among developers who are also working in Open Source by the way so this is ref referencing to a commit when they basically changed all the continue to pair uh the

Comment was it's ours now out I think that like I think that was probably just I mean it's kind of like a funny little thing but obviously you know within the whole drama people definitely uh were pissed off at it and then I'm not sure if YC actually did their due diligence on this knowing it is a fork the founder profile looks very strong there is a chance they applied with some with something else or whether it was a fork or

Not was never discussed 500k is a preed investment and my honest guess is that this team of Founders might work on something else very soon if it doesn't work out clearly forking a popular project shows a lot of signs of taking shortcuts with much buy without much Buy in on the other hand maybe vs code has reached infrastructure level where it's just too big to rebuild similar to chromium every browser today out there is a chromium fork and we don't seem

To care this much build with continue is straight up wild to claim when it's really just a fork with cmdf replace function agplv3 helps a lot to mitigate a lot of this not GitHub Fork function looks Shady usually that's a sign of people not caring about the previous Fork not contributing back no obligation but always nice this also causes uh the history to die old contributors are left out of the G history and credits and lastly if you want to make

It open source build something yourself only fork if the initial Steward is not trustworthy anymore or shuts down building is always more dope than forking why combinator's involvement the controversy also implicated why combinator raising questions about the selection process and due diligence so why commentators defense CEO Gary tan defended PA AI on social media emphasing the benefits of Open Source and competition criticism on why combinator so some critics including blogers bloggers like Sven schneiders uh pointed to Peri as an example

Of the decline of YC questioning why they would back a company that essentially copied another YC backed startup then due diligence concerns comments on Hacker News a site owned by YC raised questions about YC's vetting process and oversight regarding legal and license issue so this is Gary tan he was on Twitter obviously tweeting um don't understand why people are dragging a new project when literally it's an open source Apache license and that's the reason why open source is awesome and then

This person said to be fair cursor did the same thing and raised 60 Ms all right so obviously I'm not going to go through all of these threads here but Gary is basically you know replying to different people you can you know check this out links in the document and kind of just defending a lot of uh you know obviously their point of view and and uh you know them making the investment and and whatnot and then here's Bailey pum Fleet

The other co-founder of cal.com he were he basically replied to Gary tan saying tell me you don't understand about open source licensing without telling me you don't understand about open source licensing and then he basically said they took the continued Dev repo stripped the Apache license and replaced it with the proprietary non Foss Enterprise license that the founder asked chat GPT to write he also tweeted out saying this is a huge threat to uh commercial open source software if someone can

Rip off another open source company and get into YC with it and then he goes ahead and says for YC to publicly support ripping off open source is going to send out a very dangerous signal that this is acceptable and then he said yep the pr uh description reads it's ours now added renaming from continue to Pari it's ours now and then this guy nizzy says what's even worse is that they hated the cursor that cursor was charging 20 bucks a

Month for their service so they built it to not do that but then they go around and take funding for a forked repo and then Bailey says exactly if they didn't like the commercialization of cursor why have they joined YC they'll be expected to monetize their service in pretty much the same way right so here's fry pan saying the community note on my tweet we are way too open and honest for this slander uh y'all who put this here are trolling

We mentioned in the first thing about our in our about section on our GitHub that we're Fork a vs both vs code and continue Dev at Plus in many of our YouTube videos and that is true I can definitely uh 100% % say that you know I mean you can see it right here they have that in their their read me and their about section and they also I've seen it mentioned in their get uh their YouTube videos cuz I actually

Watched a couple of their YouTube videos but there is at the same time good points that other people bring up here where you know this person says you are legally relicensed pair to an Enterprise non-op Source license called pair Enterprise ee license even through continue even though continue is Apache 2.0 the your project violates multiple terms in Apache License continue Dev you should sue these clowns okay wow I just realized that it actually was this post was deleted by the post

Author um so that's he must have just deleted it fairly recently but anyways I found a screenshot of it right here um where he basically replied dog I chat gbt the license anyone is free to use our app for free for whatever they want if there's a problem with the license just let me know and I'll change it we're busy building right now can't be bothered with legal so people kind of got pissed off about that too they're like and you

Couldn't get chat gbt to explain this and then user Apache License right here now some people are talking about how he deleted the Tweet oh and this is the guy who created uh blueberry uh AI so shout out to him all right and last Community response I just want to go over is this one all right so this is just what someone said I I don't know the details of course but basically he says so I put up a proxy on

Their app and guess what the two 470k coinbase Engineers are calculating users use on client side I blocked their logor token API and now I can access all their models without any usage restriction LOL um so basically he's claiming to set up a proxy app suggesting they are intercepting the app's requests and then saying uh says calculating user usage on the client side meaning the usage data is being processed and managed on the user's device rather than on secure server and

Then by blocking particular API endpoint called log turn tokens which tracks usage or log API tokens probably uh the user claims they can bypass the app's usage restrictions and access all models without any limitation I don't know if that's true or not that's just what he said a lot of people are making comments saying that it's an undeveloped app or whatever of course it's new at the end of the day you got like I can see both sides I'm not here

To hate on uh parir AI personally I'm just here to give you guys what's going on right now now pairs response so in the face of this criticism pair Ai and the one of the founders took steps to address the concerns so license correction so Peri now released the project under the same Apache open source license as the original project um and then public apology so pan issued an apology on Monday so today acknowledging the two major mistakes one the licensing

Issue and then two the lack of clear attribution to the original project which in their announcement I can say that's you know it definitely was not clear they didn't even mention it but you know if you knew the project like 2 3 weeks before then you probably would know that it's uh continue to Fork I mentioned that in my video like I said and then transparency efforts so pan has committed to making the project Origins and nature of as a fork

More transparent uh in their materials and here is his apology tweet right here we were excited to announce our product and Company on Twitter yesterday but you've you've all helped us understand you've all helped us helped us to understand that we did so in a way that was halfhazard at best and and at worst offensive to the open source community that we love we made two big mistakes first we kicked off our project by forking continueing vs code we did this

Because we wanted to build an open source AI code editor with the form factor of vs code and with the usefulness of continuous extension this double Fork was the fastest way to get something up and running for us to experiment and build off of we tried to trans we tried to be transparent about what we' done as much as possible since the beginning of our journey but that wasn't good enough what we screwed up critically was not being clear enough about

This we were just starting out and wanted to launch as fast as possible but doing so upon a fork of others were without many new features and talking about it so publicly online made it look like we were stealing the work of others as our own this is the opposite of what we want to be and how we want to act we're very sorry and hope to earn your trust over the coming months as we build our own features for users

Second we flub the license Our intention was to use the Apache 2.0 license like continue does our repo has two models and we got this and we got this right in one of them and wrong in the other we thought the license in the root repo was wasn't that important so we just generated one that we thought was open in hindsight this sort of halfhazard treatment was not only technically incorrect but offensive to everyone who contributes to open source projects and

The Very nature of what makes open source special we've corrected our mistakes and we won't make mistakes like this again finally we just want to say one last thing and this is more personal yesterday turned from a day of excitement the first day of the YC fall batch and the day we announced our product on Twitter to a day of remorse for us we were excited so excited that we let the the promotion and defense of our product get ahead of

Us in particular I understand my comment about quitting my 270k job rubbed a lot of people the wrong way the reason I said this was to emphasize how big of a deal this was for me I grew up in a single mother uh household on government subsidies in Canada so making this decision was not easy at all I've worked hard over the last few years to gain experience and have savings for my family so now that I could justify bigger risks

Uprooting my entire life and making this decision wasn't easy at all our community who knew me before yesterday may have understood this but with context this sounds pretentious and insensitive really sorry about this going forward we're going to improve the way we communicate and focus on making something people want thank you for calling us out yesterday and thank you for reading this post this guy says the upward this caused is actually good publicity you got my attention you address the mistakes

Iterate and move forward what do you guys think do you think this is good publicity or bad publicity I mean at the end of the day I I mean I could I don't know some people may like be completely turned off or whatever the case may be I could not I don't see how they could not just like you know make make a good product and turn this around and they build something great people will use it I mean at the

End of day they got the reach they got the distribution they got the eyeballs it's really up to them I that's my opinion um you know if you have the distribution and you can actually build a quality product then people most likely are going to use it that's they can build something that's better than cursor then people are going to start using it so broader implications this controversy has sparked discussions about several important issues in the tech startup ecosystem so open

Source ethics this import the importance of respecting open source licenses and the community's princi principles DC funding practices so people are questioning uh how thoroughly V Venture Capital uh firms including accelerators like Yom uh vet their Investments and then AI startup hype Reflections on the eagerness of uh VCS to fund AI startups potentially overlooking due diligence uh in the process and then originality and startups debates about the value and of derivative products versus truly innovative ideas in the startup ecosystem so

Others we're all within pretty much the same year batch or maybe the year but different batches but yeah you can check that out too so a lot of different AI Alternatives IDE to cursor are coming out and not this is like U you know a recurring theme that we've been talking about on this channel for those of you don't know we do a bunch of videos on cursor AI coding pair programmers Etc and we've been seeing this trend happen and I've

Been saying you know this is the war of the race of the AI competition AI pair programmer competition we have extensions we have you know Claude Dev Claude engineer we just got 01 engineer too so stay tuned I'll make a video on that and a bunch of other ones um we got continue Dev we got and then we got the ID we got Zed AI IDE we got um peir AI we got blueberry AI now we got uh void um and

We got a bunch of other ones right and these are going to continue popping up um so let me know what you think about all these different AI editors popping up some are Forks of forks some are you know original some are Forks of forks of whatever the case may be um let me know what you guys think about all this and then implications for the I AI IDE space so like I said increase competitions with multiple players like cursor continue

Dev Pari space is becoming crowded potentially leading to faster Innovation but also Market saturation and then focus on differentiation so companies may need to focus well definitely will need to focus on unique features or specializations to stand out because at the end of the day if someone can just Fork an open source software and then like add a few new features I mean I don't want to say anyone could do it but you know with the right knowledge the right maybe

A little bit of funding or whatever even maybe you don't need funding but whatever and I mean you could do it right so how are you going to differentiate yourself how are Moes going to be built in software and Tech just in Tech in general now with AI it's making things a lot easier so how can you differentiate yourself as a software me personally I think it involves you know who you are as a Founder the founder as well as what

Systems structures you can set up leveraging different systems leveraging AI agents all right how you can set that up in your business and uh you know what type of brand you can build and you know how you can make things convenient for the user and solve um a user user's pain points in the best way possible right so I think that's a few different ways to build a strong mode and software and how that's going to be evolving in the next

Few months years Etc uh let me know what your thoughts are too around that and then ethical considerations so the pair AI controversy uh may lead to scrutiny for other AI coding tools and development practices and or and then trust issues so the pair AI incident might lead to increased skepticism toward the new open source projects especially those backed by VC funding and what do you guys think let me know in the comments Down Below have you guys tried PA AI

I do think that they need to do a lot more Innovation and come up with some unique features like for example here is pair AI right here right we can see it's if you're familiar with continue Dev like so this is literally vs code and then if I pull up s code right here this is continue Dev right here we can see our models add chat model we can see all the different models here all right so this is this is

Continue Dev right here you're not familiar with continue Dev and then if I go to pair AI right here I can add model and it's a little bit different here but it's pretty much the same if we go here and select all the different models and this is like what continue Dev kind of had a strength over um something like cursor with is that you could use Contin together. a LM studio um you can use olama cohere way more models than
