Breaking news Helen toner ex-board member of open AI speaks out and says why Sam Alman was fired during the whole open AI Scandal let's dive right into [Music] it all right guys so this is a clip from Helen toner and if you're not familiar with her she was um a part of the board during the whole well she was just a part of open AI board and and she was you know you would hear a lot about her you would hear

Her name a lot when the whole open AI Scandal was going on where Sam mman got fired and then rehired again and there was so much speculation you know everyone in the AI Community or everyone in the world was speculating why Sam was actually fired because he thought he was such a great you know or a lot of people thought he was such a great leader a great you know uh CEO or founder and it was so sudden it was so

Abrupt people were wondering okay what was going on here and all we really heard was he was not consistently candid with the board and we never really got an explanation of what that meant so here's a clip of Helen toner on the Ted AI show and she's kind of given her summary as to why Sam got fired I'm going to play the clip here and then we'll uh uh I'll let you know what I think of it for years Sam had

Made it really difficult for the board to actually do that job by you know withholding information misrepresenting things that were happening at the company um in some cases outright lying to the board um you know at this point everyone always says like what give give me some examples and um I can't share all the examples but to give a sense of sort of the kind of thing that I'm talking about is things like you know when chat GPT came out November

2022 the board was not informed in advance about that we learned about chat gbt on Twitter um Sam didn't inform the board that he owned the open AI startup fund even though he you know constantly was claiming to be an independent board member with no financial interest in the company um on multiple occasions he gave us inaccurate information about the small number of formal safety processes that the company did have in place meaning that it was you know basically impossible for

The board to know how well those safety processes were working or what might need to change and then you know a last example that I can share because it's been very widely reported relates to this paper that I wrote um which has been you know I think way overplayed in the press the problem was that after the paper came out Sam started lying to other board members in order to try and push me off the board um so it was another

Example that just like really damaged our ability to to trust him and and actually only happened in late October last year when we were already talking pretty seriously about whether we needed to fire him and so you know there's more individual examples and for any individual case Sam could always come up with some kind of like innocuous sounding explanation of why it wasn't a big deal or it misinterpreted or whatever but the you know the end effect was that after years

Of this kind of thing all four of us who fired him came to the conclusion that we just couldn't believe things that Sam was telling us and that's a completely unworkable place to be in as a board especially a board that is supposed to be providing independent oversight over the company not just like you know helping the CEO to to raise more money so interesting stuff there um you know really interesting stuff uh what she said I mean we always we

Heard the whole saying that you know Sam wasn't being consistently candid so she's kind of somewhat explaining what that means here um you know a lot of speculation still was you know oh did did ilas see something like what you know is there some greater so I mean what I see here I mean yeah it's probably you know at least true from the board's perspective you know those four that fired uh Sam that you know Sam was doing some of these

Things or they didn't find out about gpg is probably hiding certain things from the board or whatever not communicating the best way at least from that's what she's saying um now was that everything that got him fired was there something more was there a Tipping Point you know we don't fully know um but yeah this really just adds to the open AI drama I mean we've been seeing back to back week after week it's really still a so propa even after

All this stuff like um last week uh a week or so go Ilia res uh resigned as well as another um executive right and it's I mean it's really just and I did a video on that ilas said that he's doing his own thing and it kind of seems like he may have just been there kind of until um you know things tone down I mean we don't really know it's just speculation but yeah this keeps adding to the uh Saga

Of the open a open AI drama also mentioning she was mentioning about like the security um stuff with open AI here's something that open AI actually has um basically said recently so open AI has recently begun training its New Frontier Model and we anticipate the resulting systems to bring us to the next level capabilities on our path to AGI while we are proud to build and release models that are industry-leading and both uh capabilities are safe uh and safety we welcome

A robust debate at this important moment at a first task of Safety and Security committee will uh will be to evaluate uh evaluate and further develop opening eyes processes and safeguards over the next 90 days at the conclusion of the 90 days the Safety and Security committee will share their recommendations with the full uh with the full board following the full board's review open will publicly share an update on adopted recommendations in a manner that is consistent in with Safety and

Security open AI Technical and policy experts Alex Al Alexander uh MRE uh head of preparedness and Etc all these other people um will also be on the committee additionally open will retain and consult with other safety security and Technical experts to support this work including former cyber security officials Rob Joy who advises opening eye on security and John Carlin all right so they put something out basically saying you know they're they're um heavily going to be you know working on safety

And stuff all this stuff um and yeah it's kind of just interesting uh they did they put this out recently it's interesting to see um I guess this drama and seeing it more unfold uh I mean this kind of just adds to the idea of like hey what's going on at open a obviously they're at the Forefront right now with the AI Revolution is this drama going to affect their lead in the AI race you know our companies I don't know

About Google but I mean maybe Google or maybe xai which just got uh which is growing quickly as well and all these other companies like is are they going to catch up or um or maybe it's open source right but yeah I just want to give you guys a quick update um as to what Helen toner actually came out and said into regards of the Sam ultman firing you want to stay up to date with all the AI news as well
